I thought tonights Fox 9 story about the Mille Lacs Lakes fishing opener to be one-sided. It portrayed the Ojibiway in a very negative manner. I believe Minnesota is celebrating 150 years of statehood this year and this just proves the oppression and disempowerment the state of minnesota and its white residents continue to force on the Native American Tribes in Minnesota. The United States Supreme Court sided with Ojibaway rights to net fish. It angers me that the Greedy resort owners are complaining about terrorism being down last year. If they don't like, they can quit and sell out. Find another lake to exploit and make money at.

Move on up here and you will see just what it is like. I live it everyday. Not Greedy resort owners Business owners that are trying to pay there BILLS. Just like you going to work everyday to pay yours. When you do you will see. To many blind eyes have been turned. I thought it was a GREAT story. Fish like every one else. At least give the fish a chance.

Right, seigning is the greedy way. Netting a whole school, instead of line fishing is not sporting. These folks have dis-empowered themselves. Instead of moving with progress, they want to stay with two hundred year old ways that won't work any-more. A level playing field isn't in their own intrest though. Playing the "tradition" card is getting stale.

If they want to play the tradition card, how about making thier own way and stop living off of goverment checks every two weeks. Besides they get money from the casinos, Thats not very traditional!!!!!!!! Net fishing is not used to survive anymore. Now it is used to sell thier catch for money.

How ignorant can you people be? Netting is not a sport to us it is a very sacred tradition at least for Mille Lacs Band Members. Non Indians have traditions that they have been practicing for thousands of years, why the big deal when it comes to us netting. Because you can't do it? You talk about us getting money from our casinos yes, but if it wasn't for our casinos thousands of non indians would be out of a job and would be living off of the government and your money. Grow up people and open your eyes. We do not sell our fish we give it to our elders and our families live off of it. Ignorance that's all I can say.

I have better things to do with my money than to give it to a casino! Yes they do sell fish! The last time I was at Mille Lacs two native americans reeking of marijuana tried to sell me a cooler full of fish. I am sure that for the most part that traditions are carried out honorably, but as with all people, there are a few bad apples who create a bad reputation.

OF course there are gonna be those select few who are dumb enough to create a bad rep for Indian people. But yet you still judge those who do carry out our tradition, because of those stupid two people who obviously don't care about Indian people by selling fish and creating drama. I just wish some people would want to learn more about our traditions and culture before judging what we do.

That's bull sheet, nativepride. We were born and raised in that area. I worked a job that installed telephone systems, and my job took me to NE Wisconsin. While there, a federal judge named Barb Crabb made the decisions that the Indians could gill net or spear fish before the opener. The DNR evaluated the lakes, determined the amount to be taken, and of that, the Indians had so many lakes that they could do this in. We stood there and watched Indians in a boat throw a spear into the water, pull up a walleye, and if the walleye fell off, they just speared another. There are pictures on record to where they threw over 3000 walleyes into the local dump and when asked why they didn't clean them and eat them, they responded by saying "it's our tradition to take them, but we don't HAVE to eat them." We stood outside in weather that was -28 below to get the equipment working, and we watched while Indians in a truck drove down the road, shot 4 deer, but only picked up 3 because the 4th was to far out into the ditch area. Don't give us bull shEEt about your traditions. We also went to the Mille Lacs casino and had drunken, stupid Indians trying to sell us fish. If this is what you're proud of, we feel damn sorry for you and the band you belong in. We've seen the waste of the DNR pulling up gill nets that had been left in the water, and in that gill net, it had not only walleyes, but northerns and muskie caught, but had been there so long, they were not worthy of eating.
You believe you have the rights to do what the hell you want, when you want, wherever you wan

wherever you want and to hell with the whitey's. Well, take a look at those pictures of rotting fish, (most of them pregnant walleyes), and tell us what rights you think you have today? Go up to the Red Lake tribe, look at the siding pulled from the outside of the houses that was used to burn, and tell us what rights you have being an Indian? I worked in Valentine NE for almost 8 months, and in all those months, they first day of their issued Government checks, they spent buying cases and cases and cases of booze, and they all wanted to buy you a drink. Then in two weeks, they're out of money and they go from bar to bar to bar, begging money for drinks. The entire time, they have their families along with them, some of them still in dirty diapers.
What rights do you have? Isn't Indian transition to take from Mother Earth what you can use, not what you can abuse?
And it is abuse. You've got some scum sucking bottom feeder judge to declare that you are the downtrodden, so now you're going to abuse the system to piss off the white man because you're to greedy and lazy to work a job like the rest of this country. My heart feels no sorrow for you and your ploy.

You have no rights as far as we are concerned, so quit the damn whining, get a job, and become an American worker, not a American Handout.

First of all midevil I have a wonderful job working for the my tribe. Second of all we are talking about Lake Mille Lacs here not Wisconsin or Red Lake so get it right dumbass. You act like non indians are saints yeah right get a f'n life guy. You are just as bad when it comes to alcohol. I really don't give a rats ass about your opinion you are so ignorant it's not even funny. So stay in wisconsin and get a life. You know damn well if you had the right to net you would be doing it. It all comes down to you are just mad because you can't do. Well it's never gonna change and it's sure as hell is not gonna stop so get over it.
