Well, I've packed my snow and rain gear--and my official "Joe Mauer" Rapala fishing lure from the Twins. That can only mean one thing. Time for the Governor's Fishing Opener at Breezy Point!

You often hear how Minnesota is ranked first nationally in the sales of fishing licenses per capita. One-point-four million last year. (We're number ONE! And we love to BRAG! Take THAT Wisconsin!)

But what you might not hear (but you will) is how the number of anglers is falling off. The percentage of Minnesotans who fish is declining. And the DNR is aiming to lure folks back to the lakes and rivers this year with a full-on campaign: direct mail, billboards, radio ads and other outreach efforts.

The reason for this? Probably the growing popularity of couch-based electronic games, and the fact that people think they have to travel long distances to find good fisheries. (Have you ever seen the lunkers pulled out of Lake Calhoun?) The result is people, especially kids who don't spend time in nature and therefore, don't really appreciate it . The experts call it "nature deficit." I'd call it turning our backs on what makes us Minnesota. Not California. Or Iowa, for that matter.

The cheapest thrills, the most amazing sights, and most soul-soothing experiences are right outside our door. If it takes a marketing campaign to make us realize it, well, ok then. Sign me up.

The number of anglers licenses has dropped off. I'm sorry to say that I am part of that. You see it is not that I don't want to go to the lakes but I cant afford to. I am busy working overtime to pay bills, The overtime is to pay for gas for the regular time.

We are the others who have dropped off. We spent a lifetime fishing this state from the time we were wee tadpoles until Minnesota started imported Immigrants. Also, with this state's insistent monetary increase of everything from license's to gas taxes to rules that are one sided against the white and black blue collar workers and more for the Hmong's and Somalian's, then it's time to fish in Wisconsin, or not fish at all. There is truly a sad teeter-totter effect going on with these immigrants that the citizens see, and we choose not to pay out of our nose for these immigrants fun in the sun days. Tell Pawlenty that we hope he falls in the water and takes the unlicensed driver R.T. with him when he goes. Maybe the cold water will wake both of them boys up.

I remember back a few years ago when I used to go to blackhawk lake in eagan. The last time I was there I saw the walkway bridge with two hmong families about thirty people fishing. Each one had two five gallon buckets full of sunnies that varied in size from 3/4 of an inch to three inches. That effectively killed the lake. A dnr person was there,I over heard the conversation and no one had a fishing license, but the dnr person did nothing! I know that if it were me and I didn't have a license I would be fined big time. Can anyone explain to me why the laws don't apply to immigrants?
