DARKNESS DESCENDS! (SOON)

Surly Brewing Company has already reached legendary status with its Darkness and Darkness Day. Darkness is a Russian Imperial Stout brewed and bottled and distributed on site at the brewery once a year. Last year, there were only 200 bottles made and the Darkness Day event took place on a freezing cold December Day. Need a reference point? Here's a video from my pal and homebrew mentor Don Osborn - http://donosborn.com)

Darkness Day - December 15, 2007

This year, the brewery has more than 4,000 bottles ready to go for Darkness Day on October 25th. Doors open at Noon. The first 700 people will be given a wristband and the option of buying up to (6) 750ml bottles. There's three bands playing throughout the day:

12:15 GuzzleMug
2:00 God Came From Space
4:00 Powermad

There will also be food, and of course - the best beer Surly has to offer.
For more information see: http://www.surlybrewing.com

Here are some videos and pictures of Brewhound and his volunteer comrades helping out -- labeling bottles and hand-dipping them in wax. This years label is awesome, designed by local tattoo artist Nic Skrade. Poster of the design will be available Saturday.

As Surly's owner Omar would say: "See you drinking!"

Chip, great post. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some Darkness this Saturday (if I'm lucky). Check out my homebrew blog if you get a chance - http://captainsbeerblog.com

Nice post - love the video and pics. Any suggestions on a good time to show up this year?

Not sure if you HAVE to show up early since there are 700 wristbands (compared to 200 last year), but it may not hurt to grab a thermos of coffee and some dominoes and get there around 10am.

Where will the line be forming this year? I'll probably be there early are there any specific places we can park if no one is there directing? I'll be there early.

There will be some kind folks (Dean & Rita) pointing the way for parking. Just get in the general area of 4811 Dusharme Drive in Brooklyn Center and hopefully it will start being obvious.

This is a blog for BrewHound aka Chip Walton, producer for Fox 9 News and former beer columnist for Hill Country Directions ("Brewhouse Bulletin"). I also have a news-related blog as 'newshound-mpls' This blog is specifically meant for sharing and increasing my enjoyment of craft beers from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and all over the country. We'll discuss brews, breweries, beer events, beer tourism, etc. I enjoy and respect beer. Used to be a big fan of the ESB, IPA, hop hop hops! But in the last few years, I’ve grown more into stouts, strong/old ales, barleywine, experimental brews. The Twin Cities (and Midwest [heck, all of America]) is full of brewpubs, microbrews and well-stocked beer stores. My beer philosophy: Beer should be good, lift the spirit and bring fun people together.
