Here’s the headline:  Former Senator George McGovern is calling on Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.  Remember 1972? This a man who was so far left of the mainstream that he was trounced by Richard Nixon in one of the greatest landslides in presidential politics. And now he’s offering political advice?
This is what has plagued the Democratic party since George McGovern. With the exception of Bill Clinton in 1992, the Dems seem to have a brain lock in nominating a candidate that can appeal to the masses. I can’t even give them credit for Bill Clinton because it was the mastery of that man and his campaign team that propelled him to victory. He ran as a moderate, stumbled when he moved to the left as President, and eventually moved back to the center.
What is disturbing about the Democrats is that they become so infatuated with a political candidate during the primary season that they fail to see the candidate’s obvious limitations in a general election showdown. The list is endless: McGovern, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, Al Gore and John Kerry all come to mind. This type of candidate appeals to the left wing aspect of the party. This is a group that is enthusiastic, and outspoken, but needless to say, in the minority. The Democrats appear once again to be catering to this group, while ignoring the obvious difficulties they will face in the fall if Barack Obama is their nominee. Polls have shown that a significant amount of working class voters who supported Hillary Clinton will not vote for Obama.
My advice to Hillary Clinton is to stay in the race. Work it all the way to the convention. Then and only then might clearer heads prevail.
